Alford for The Dayton Weekly News We have often discussed the need for Reparations for the 400 years of slavery. The Contexts of the discussions continue on as if We never had a chance with any form of Reparations. I discovered back in the 1990's that We indeed had a go with a form of Reparations. The biggest problem was that We did not adequately exploit it nor pass it on to following generations. My Curiosity got going when I read up on the first Black Congressionally elected Officials. They were elected as part of the Reconstruction following the civil war. One of these Giants was Senator Blanche Bruce from Mississippi. People don't talk much about these Trailblazers as They were all Republicans-like that has a negative meaning. Senator Bruce during His short tenure ensured that All Free slaves became immediately eligible for the Homestead Act of 1862 which provided immense opportunity for Land Ownership and Wealth Building. In reading up on The Homestead Act, I found the the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a division of the Department of Interior, kept good Records on all activity relating to this program. This program was a 'Game Changer.' Any American citizen could identify government owned land, apply for a claim and receive the property providing They live on it and work it (usually Farming). More than half the nation was applicable and it was meant to generate population and economic growth. This was applicable to Freed Blacks also. I decided to probe deeper. Be careful what You ask; You may get it. I contacted the BLM and asked for a formal briefing. They set up a meeting with Me in Lorton, Virginia and gave Me a great overview. Then the Deputy Secretary asked if My People were from the south. I informed Him that My People evolved from Bossier Parrish, Louisiana. They declared that Someone in My Family benefited from the Homestead Act. I challenged Him on that. He asked, " Give Me One of Your Grandfather's Name." I stated 'Thomas Harry Alford." He put the name in Their very elaborate database and instantly it "hit". "Thomas H. Alford received a land grant for 160 Acres on March 20, 1916". I was shocked and My first reaction was that My Grandfather had 40 acres, not 160, or so We all thought. I walked out of there with a photo copy of the deed, and a whole different mindset on the history of My People. A trip to the courthouse in Bossier Parrish, La. was in order to verify all of this. I arrived in Benton, La. courthouse ready to spend hours researching this "controversy". Sure enough shortly after the date on the deed an entry was found, "Thomas H. and Fanny Alford awarded 160 acres from the US government". However, two lines later "Thomas H. and Fanny Alford transfer 120 acres to Mr. Roos". In My shock I went to the clerk for an explanation. She chuckled and then said, "It looks like Ol' Man Roos go to Your Granddaddy". She then went on to explain that what I had just detected was on act of some of the greatest land racketeering which prevailed throughout the south.. She said, "Follow all activity by Roos and see how He legally connnived land from "Black Folks". You see My Grandparents were illiterate like most Blacks down south. He, and others like Him, would approach Them and inform Them that He could get Them Free land. Yes, He would make a claim and apply in Their Name for 160 acres at the time. When it was approved He would give Them 40 acres and take 120 acres for Himself. This guy made a fortune doing this. He would even have a strategy of picking up those 120 acre clumps so that they would be contiguous and he, in the end, would have giant masses of land to develop and flip for big money. All this at the expense of My Grandparents and many, many others Who had a great opportunity before Them but couldn't get the right technical assistance or government follow through. I showed My Relatives the documentation and They became angry at Me as if I let it happen (Kill The Messenger). This program lasted for decades and could have taken Blacks to another level of economic power and self-sufficiency. However, this great opportunity came before Us and We just couldn't pull it off. A few Blacks were educated enough to take advantage of the program. They would become Prominent Land Owners and Community Leaders. Also, They would become targets for Those envious of Their Acumen and newly claimed power. Life would not be easy as Someone was trying to take that land at every opportunity. Many would soon lose what They had earlier won. PSA: Rastafari and Shashamane In 1948 Emperor Haile Sellassie I donated 500 acres (2.0 km2) of his private land to allow members of the Rastafari movement, Ethiopian World Federation (EWF) officers and members and other settlers from Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean to go to Africa. The return would be under the auspices of the EWF, founded in 1937 by the Emperor's special emissary to Black America, Melaku E. Bayen. The official letter confirming the "land grant" of 1948 was submitted to the members and executives of the Ethiopian World Federation in 1955. Following up on this, the first West Indian family and Federation members from Montserrat were Mr. James Piper and his wife Helen who arrived that same year as the first land grant administrators, returning to make a permanent settlement in 1955 on behalf of the Federation. The Time is Right for Reparations by Benjamin F. Chavis-The Dayton Weekly News For more than 45 Million Black Americans there are many issues that unite or divide Us. Undoubtedly, the issue of Reparations for African People in general and in particular for Black Americans is an issue began as a divisive topic but now receives support from a broad cross-section of Blacks in America. Of course, there are some Who wanted to table a national discussion of Reparation in the aftermath of the election of President Barack H. Obama. Yet, there were many others Who have argued that now is the most propitious time to accelerate the national dialogue about Reparations because there is a 'Brother' in the White House. This is a pivotal year because of the November elections. Any issue that is related to Race will be used by Those Who are opposed to President Obama. The Goal of conservatives is to polarize American Voters to vote Their Racial prejudice instead of voting Their conscience about the future of the nation as an inclusive participatory democracy. Given the recent polarization around the calls for Equal Justice and Fairness in the Trayvon Martin killing, it would be naive to think that Race will not play a factor in upcoming elections. The Truth is Race is just not a problem that crept onto the national scene accidentally. Race has been a Social, Economic and Political problem in America for more than 200 years. This is nothing new. What is new, however, is how the Victims of racism see Themselves, and how the perpetrators of racism view Themselves. Fortunately, renowned Legal Scholars such as Harvard's Charles Ogletree and Others have articulated a rational defense for Reparations, which would be Therapeutic not only for Black Americans, but also for All Americans. I have consistently supported the call and demand for Reparations that go beyond whatever monetary compensation. Reparations are also about "Repairing the damage" that was done to Millions of African People, not just in America, but in the Caribbean, Central and South America, in Africa and throughout the rest of the World. The United Nations is slowly working on establishing a permanent memorial to the Victims of the infamous trans-Atlantic slave trade. In Washington,D.C., the construction of the African American Museum has begun. The United States Senate has issued an "apology" for slavery. And in My Home state of North Carolina, Gov. Bev Purdue has just called for the state to spend $10.3 Million in "Reparations" to the Victims of the vicious eugenics state program that sterilized thousands of People against Their will. Most of Those Who were unjustly and savagely sterilized were Black. Again, no amount of money could ever justify or rectify that awful and callous past. Still, Gov. Perdue's actions are the Right steps at the Right time. Healing is a long process. It takes time. The perpetrators of racism need a "repairing" of Their minds and hearts. It is interesting to note that even amidst a recovering of the American economy from the threshold of severe economic ruin, Billions of dollars are being spent by Candidates and campaigns for political office throughout the U.S. like They have unlimited money-trees to spend without reservation or limitation. The point here is so much of the "old money" and ingrained wealth of the nation came directly from the systematic economic exploitation of African People during 500 years of slavery and post-slavery institution-building. That is why it will take a tremendous calculation to determine a full accounting of the financial and human toll of the slave trade an its aftermath. Harper's magazine did a study that concluded that the U.S. owes Black Americans more than $100 Trillion in Reparations. It's probably more than that. This may not be the perfect time to raise this issue. Judging by the past, there is never a perfect time. Today is as good as any time. Let's Work harder on the issue of Reparations. We can begin by Supporting The National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America(NCOBRA), which will hold its national convention in Philadelphia, June 22-24, 2012. Reparations for Black Americans should be supported by All Americans. The Wise should strive to achieve four chief objectives (Purusharthas) in One's life. They are:

1. dharma (righteousness),
2. artha (material wealth),
3. kama (desire) and
4. moksha (salvation).

I remember it well. I was between trying on a couple pair of shoes at REI, when the sales associate asked a question that stopped time momentarily: "Did you hear that Michael Jackson Died?!" His voice conveying the feeling of disbelief. The three of us--my partner, the salesman and I were stunned, and seemingly stuck in a moment that changed us. For a number of days following his death, Michael's music permeated space and time like I had never experienced before. It was surreal experience. With each song, I was inevitably transported to different points in my life; the music a sort of soundtrack that somehow impacted a couple decades of my life. I remember that night. I was one of many in the house that night, waiting to see the epic video Thriller. I was changed and most importantly, inspired. Before Michael, there was Don Cornelius. He died last week. As a result of his vision to have a place to spotlight Black talent, Mr. Cornelius inspired many youth like Micheal Jackson AND The Jackson Five.You either know, or have seen or heard of those BIG (bigger the better right?) Afro and wide bell-bottom wearing, hip-bumping Sistahs and Brothas that sang or danced their way into mainstream American Culture. With Mr. Cornelius' forward thinking, the space was granted, and we, again transcended space and time through his show Soul Train--a show that span multiple decades. You know, when we do it, We Do It Well! And now, Whitney.... We've lost her. This time, I got the word through a text message. I was just as stunned, and stuck in momentary disbelief and time, as when I heard about Micheal. For me, Whitney was akin to that auntie that was old enough to babysit me early on, and later as we grew, the one I would have sat in the bathroom on the side of the tub or toilet (with the seat down), legs folded, as she made herself up for a date. She was not my aunt, but I'm sure she was that 'auntie' to someone. Because you will be rushed with media that will 'report' her many accomplishments, I will only speak of my proudest moments. Remember, "...and I will Always Love You."? Remember when she hit that note in the Body Guard? and how it sat in your soul? and how you may have had chills because you were transfixed by the visual and the sounds you weren't sure you were hearing? Do you remember? I do. Do you remember HER--Whitney's--Star-Spangled Banner? That moment: "..and the LAND of the Freeeeeeeee. And the Home of the Braa-aa-ave!" Now, you know. Whitney and Miss Patti LaBelle? Hands down; nothing comes close in my opinion. So we've lost her in body. However, Whitney Houston, along with countless others are there in Spirit.
